How to Check Leaf Springs on a Boat Trailer

By Southern Boats on Trailer Upkeep

A boat trailer is one of those things the avid boat owner cannot be without. It facilitates launching the boat and removing it from the water at the end of the season. Maintaining a boat trailer is vital. One part of the trailer that demands special attention is the leaf springs.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Step 1

Get a feel for the ride of your trailer as you drive down the highway or any road.

Step 2

Check the leaf springs of your trailer visually. As the leaf springs are essentially the shock absorbers of your trailer, you must make sure they are functioning properly. They should have a nice, smooth arc in order to work as they should. Replace the leaf springs if the arc is not smooth.

Step 3

Examine the leaf springs for their condition. If they are rusty, replace them.

Step 4

Look to make sure that the bolts securing the leaf springs are securely fastened. If they are loose or rusted, fix or replace them.

Step 5

Wash the leaf springs, especially after taking a boat out of salt water. This will extend the life of the leaf springs.
